Content: The first part of the paper alaizes the different terorical approaches to the concepts of “collective memory” and analyzes the specific historical context in which, in the immediate aftermath of World War II, the expulsions of German populations to Central and Eastern European countries took place. The second part is devoted to the development and dynamics of collective memory referring to the entire context of memories of World War II, both in West and East Germany; the analysis uses the two general reframing schemes of “memory of victims” and “memory of perpetrators.” In the final part, the issues of “politics of memory” are discussed and extended to an international context.
