On Tuesday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 14, as part of the FirEUrisk Project, ISIG and the Institute of Bioeconomy of CNR Sassari were engaged in Suni, Sardinia, in the initiative “Fire Risk Mitigation through Prescribed Fire Interventions and Preventive Silviculture – The Experience and Silviculture of Suni the Participatory Input of Stakeholders.”
The decades-long experience of reintroducing prescribed fire as a fire risk prevention tool was the focus of discussions during the two-day event, which was widely attended by residents, the Barracellare Company, the Forestry and Environmental Vigilance Corps, the Forestas Agency, Civil Defense and various local administrators in the area.
As part of the initiative, ISIG provided an opportunity to network between the scientific community, citizens, emergency practitioners and public decision makers to promote further risk reduction strategies and actions, including communication campaigns to engage all local communities. Opportunities for inter-municipal cooperation within the Council of Europe Toolkit were also outlined.
The positive feedback from the local community of Suni and the Planargia area is an excellent stimulus to plan further initiatives for participatory construction of prevention, adaptation and mitigation strategies.
