What is I-SEAMORE?
The I-SEAMORE project aims to revolutionize maritime security across the EU by implementing advanced systems that improve awareness, detection, and response at sea. These systems address both humanitarian and security challenges, in line with EU values and
legal frameworks.
Funded by the Horizon Europe program (Grant Agreement No.101073911), I-SEAMORE strives to improve the situational awareness and operational capabilities of European authorities for maritime surveillance operations.
Why is it important?
Every year, thousands of lives are lost at sea due to unsafe migration routes and criminal activities such as smuggling. Meanwhile, the EU faces growing challenges at its maritime borders, balancing the need for security with humanitarian responsibilities.
I-SEAMORE seeks to provide solutions that can:
- Enable early detection and prevention of criminal activities, including human trafficking and smuggling.
- Facilitate early intervention during emergencies, especially for vulnerable people.
The importance of different perspectives in the development of security systems
Effective and ethical maritime security systems cannot be developed in isolation. Incorporating diverse perspectives-from policymakers to end users, from human rights advocates to technology developers-is essential to ensure that these systems are:
Practical and effective for all stakeholders, particularly those at risk.
Aligned with security, humanitarian needs and legal frameworks.
Sustainable: Designed for long-term impact beyond just safety.
Ownership: Developed through collaboration, reflecting the shared values of the EU.
Following these principles and involving a diverse group of voices, I-SEAMORE develops systems that are technologically advanced, ethically sound, and respectful of fundamental rights.
