Major forest fires of 2022 report published: ISIG and CNR analyze Karst fire

We are very happy to be able to announce that the Report on the Great Forest Fires of 2022, developed within the FirEUrisk project, has been published on the website of the EU Science Hub – Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The report is available at this link As ISIG, together with the CNR Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche we were responsible for producing the section on the Karst fire that affected the cross-border area between Italy and Slovenia in July 2022. We focused, in particular, on the mechanisms of cooperation between the operators of the two countries, the response of the local population, and the lessons learned in the face of an episode that was unprecedented in terms of extent and impact, but is likely to be repeated with increasing frequency in the future, also due to climate change. It is our belief that knowledge on such a crucial issue should be instrumental in informing the actions of all actors involved in risk reduction and management and the growth of territorial and community resilience. We would like to thank the PROTEZIONE CIVILE GORIZIA and the Civil Protection of the Autonomous Region of FVG, the Gorizia Fire Department and Gasilska enota Nova Gorica, and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Forestry Inspectorate for their valuable contributions.
