MareFuturo: co-creating sustainable development for Maritime Spatial Planning

In recent months ISIG has collaborated with CNR ISMAR (Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council) by facilitating three workshops as part of MareFuturo, a project dedicated to maritime spatial planning. The objective of the three events was the co-creation of scenarios for the future of the maritime areas of the Northern Adriatic, the Strait of Sicily and the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea, thus helping to outline a shared vision in favor of sustainability and protection of marine biodiversity.

A course of work that began on November 19-20 in Venice, continued on November 28-29 in Palermo, and culminated on December 12-13 in Genoa. Over 100 participants, representatives of institutions, agencies and associations, analyzed, integrated and validated three different scenarios for the protection of each of the maritime areas covered by the project:

  • Slow Pace: the scenario characterized by gradual development, with limited innovations and limited focus on environmental protection.
  • Nature at Work: the scenario that focuses on biodiversity conservation, promoting the extension of protected areas and the strict application of the precautionary principle.
  • Blue Development: the scenario geared toward the rapid development of the blue economy, integrating innovative technologies and sustainable solutions for harmonious management of natural and marine resources.

Initial workshop sessions allowed participants to explore each scenario in depth, identifying elements of coherence and inconsistency, synergies and conflicts, proposing complementary actions and assessing the main enabling factors needed for their implementation.

The concluding sessions, dedicated to plenary sharing of the results, were a crucial moment of discussion aimed at identifying common areas of improvement and defining the most appropriate tools to successfully implement the proposed actions.

Thanks to the collaborative environment based on the principle of co-creation and facilitated by ISIG, the MareFuturo project has been able to take advantage of multidisciplinary and participatory input, which is fundamental to addressing the challenges of maritime sustainability and enhancing the resources of our marine heritage.
