Language: Italian
Content: The study addresses the dimension of frontierra regionalism that concerns the relationship between local regional belongings and ethno-national identities. In the case under consideration, this relationship develops between Istrian belonging-with its own history, culture, and ethnic multipolarity-and the sense of nationhood of the new Croatian state that wants to be founded on the ethnic basis of Croatianness. Under these conditions, a contradiction is activated between Croatian national identity (nationality) and the enjoyment of citizenship rights, because Istrian regionalism, which cannot be completely framed in Croatian nationality, is discriminated against. Those who share this affiliation are forced to live in a state of insecurity, to which they respond with a “border mimicry” within which a continuous negotiation between local territorial affiliations and ethnic-national identities operates.
