Content: This volume summarizes the main results of the research activities carried out as part of the LIGHT ON project, coordinated by the Scientific Committee consisting of Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem (ELTE), Peace Institute (PI), and Institute of International Sociology of Gorizia (ISIG).
The research activities aim to investigate and analyze contenporaneous expressions of racism and discrimination in European countries, focusing on the perception si symbols and verbal expressions with explicit or masked racist content. The ultimate goal is to provide scientifically based knowledge of the social disvalue of these expressions and their harmful negative influence in everyday social life. The results of the research work are presented according to an architecture divided into three main components:
– documentary research, which illustrates the social context in which racism manifests itself;
– qualitative research, which studies expressions of and reactions to racism, highlighting the most prevalent racist, xenophobic and extremist symbols and verbal expressions, explaining their traditional and current meanings;
– quantitative research, which studies the main perceptions and interpretations of visual and verbal elements with racist content among young people in five European countries.
