Content: The results of the MedTrends Adriatic study show that most ‘marine’ economic sectors in the Adriatic area will grow significantly in the next 15 years, with the exception of fishing and military. New ‘marine’ sectors will increase in importance in the future. In addition, the three most important sectors-maritime transport, tourism, and the offshore oil and gas industry-are expected to show large-scale growth in the coming years. The specific emphasis of the “EU Strategy for the Adriatic-Ionian Region (EURAIR)” on Blue Growth is expected to further contribute to the growth of the marine economy sectors in the region.
Ambitious forward-looking visions for the future of the Adriatic maritime space need to be elaborated on diversified spatial scales. The ongoing revision of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development provides a useful basin-wide scheme with a strong Integrated Coastal Zone Management dimension. However, forward-looking visions need to be formulated first at the national level and later at the macro-regional level to ensure transnational coordination and optimization.
