Over 90 experts from across Europe for Final Demo Event of SAFE-CITIES: innovative solutions for cross-border urban security
From March 25-27, 2025, the cross-border area of Gorizia and Nova Gorica hosted the Final Demo Event of the European project SAFE-CITIES, an intense three days of discussion, training and experimentation that brought together more than 90 participants from 14 EU countries including law enforcement representatives, first responders, local authorities, technology developers, researchers and civil society organizations.
The event was also attended by the main authorities in the area, including the Prefect of Gorizia, the Slovenian Police, the Municipality of Gorizia (with the Local Police and the Councillor for Security), the Municipality of Nova Gorica (represented by the Deputy Mayor), representatives of Zavod GO!2025, and numerous international stakeholders.
The event represented the culmination of more than two years of joint work, aimed at developing innovative tools to make public spaces safer, more resilient and at the same time open and accessible.
Results and tested solutions:
During the work days, participants took part in training sessions and practical demonstrations of the tools developed, including:
- SBS (Scenario Builder & Serious Gaming Simulator): for 3D construction and simulation of complex security management scenarios during large events.
- SERVE (SEcuRity Vulnerability assEssment): for visual and georeferenced assessment of vulnerabilities of public spaces.
- SCoreboard: an advanced tool for transforming risk data into clear operational information.
A interactive multiplayer simulation involved participants in the collaborative management of emergency scenarios, set in symbolic locations of the European Capital of Culture 2025 (Victory Square, Transalpina-Trg Evrope Square, Kardelja Square). The test allowed participants to experiment with the configuration of crowded events, assess different threats, introduce 3D elements into the urban space, and test security countermeasures in real time.
The collected data were analyzed from a participatory perspective, highlighting the impact of SAFE-CITIES solutions not only in terms of operational effectiveness, but also in terms of sustainability and social acceptability.
GO!2025 and cross-border cooperation
The project is part of the path of GO!2025 – European Capital of Culture, enhancing its cross-border soul and contributing to the construction of a shared and safe urban space. Security is understood here as enabling element for livability, inclusion and active participation to public life. An approach already successfully tested at the February 8 opening ceremony, during which joint planning and security management ensured the success of the event.
Next steps
The project is now moving toward the finalizing the digital prototype, with the goal of extending its applicability to the management of public events and urban emergencies.
SAFE-CITIES is confirmed as a concrete example of how technological innovation, integrated with a strong ethical and participatory dimension, can support the creation of more resilient, smart and inclusive European cities.
